What is the difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon?

Plastic surgeons undergo extensive specialty training over a course of a decade. Upon completion of this training, they are awarded a Fellowship by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons [FRACS] in Plastic Surgery [FRACS (Plast)]. This is the only formal qualification in Surgery, Plastic Surgery and Cosmetic Surgery that is recognised by the Australian Medical Council. Cosmetic surgery is recognised by the Australian Medical Council as a type or part of plastic surgery. Cosmetic surgery is not recognised as a speciality by the Australian Medical Council.

Cosmetic surgeons do not undertake the same type of training as plastic surgeons. The majority of cosmetic surgeons come from various medical backgrounds and are doctors with varying amounts skills and training. Some cosmetic surgeons do not hold any specialist qualifications and are not qualified by the Royal Australian College of Surgeons.

The main difference lies in the qualifications and regulatory standards between plastic surgeons and cosmetic surgeons. Cosmetic surgery is a subspecialty of plastic surgery, it is part of plastic surgery and all plastic surgeons are cosmetic surgeons but not all cosmetic surgeons are plastic surgeons, because they do not have necessary training equivalent to a plastic surgeon.
